Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Curtis White, CTRS, Art Therapist Marnita Patton, MA, ATR, CCBT, CGT, CDP, and several other mental health professionals worked directly with residents, by going on an outing for lunch and an art adventure in the Central Florida community. Residents got to visit the Casselberry Art House and stroll through their gallery. Residents also had the opportunity to attend the opening of the exhibit Beyond Words. It was quite fitting to attend this particular exhibit because, we have combined the written word and art on an assortment of planned social integration interventions selected by residents.
Beyond Words was created by Poets and Painters, a group of artists that have been working together for years to create a cohesive body of work in response to four poems that have a wide range of subject matter. The show combined visual art with poetry; where visitors were encouraged to add their own written verse or prose to a three-dimensional “Poetree”.
Each person got to choose between a colorful printed leaf or bird shape, adding their own written message with marker and selecting a spot from which to hang the message. Everyone was excited to view the many poetic inspirations and to be involved in creating such a socially based piece of art.
As one of the very first programs in the country to base its treatment upon Social Integration, our mental health facilities offer help through a unique mix of individualized therapy and group residential programs with a clear focus towards achieving more independent living. We also provide other individualized therapy programs, step-down residential programs, and less intensive mental health services, such as Community Residential Homes, Supportive Housing, Day Treatment Programs and Life Skills training.
