Katherine Heard, Psychiatric Technician at Pasadena Villa Orlando, recently guided residents on an evening crafting activity which brought the spirit of the holidays into the milieu. First, the residents formed teams to approach the project. This encouraged discussion among each other, group decision making and creative thinking.

This Social Integration activity provided residents with the opportunity to practice different life skills to complete the task at hand. From brainstorming and purchasing materials that would be used for construction, to budgeting time and money to make the best wreaths possible; each step required continuous teamwork and communication. A variety of materials were chosen and utilized by each team like ribbon, ornaments and holiday sprigs. Once the activity was complete, each unique and lovely wreath was placed in the dining area to enjoy during the holiday season.

According to a Behavioral Health Services article, group activities like these that helps to ease holiday stress and depression. In fact, many family centered holiday activities can help bring cheer to the holidays. Traditional holiday events like decorating the tree, caroling, baking cookies, volunteering, making snowmen and driving around to look at holiday decorations can lessen stress and increase enjoyment. Additionally, keeping expectations reasonable and scheduling manageable can also alleviate the chances of becoming tense and overwhelmed with holiday functions like shopping, parties, family reunions and house guests are on the agenda.

It is the specialized and genuine activities that makes the Pasadena Villa treatment experience more relevant, appropriate and beneficial for each resident, especially when compared to any other adult residential mental health programs. In fact, activities like going to museums, theme parks, restaurants or local sporting activities and events are actually selected by our current residents themselves, to  center around a clear focus towards achieving true independence beyond treatment and discharge.
